How does mindfulness and meditation show up at work?
In my 20 year career as an event planner, I only had one client who didn’t pay me. I was so angry, I was beside myself. All that work and she refused to pay me? It felt so unfair!
I explored a law suit which I knew would keep me in anger, keep me in the situation and realistically I would probably spend as much as I would win in legal fees. I was stuck, which made me even angrier. My husband said to me, “Angela, I don’t care what you do, in two years we won’t remember that money, but I would like to have you back.” Ouch!
I concentrated on the client. Who was she? Why had this happened? In a flash, I saw who she was. While she was someone who was trying to do good on an international level, she bullied and manipulated those around her and that triggered my judgment. I then understood that her treatment of others was from fear, her fear of having to rely on someone else to do something she couldn’t (didn’t have time for or didn’t know how to). She was afraid of being let down, of it not working the way she wanted it, of it not being a success. She was trying to do good, but fear was in the driver’s seat.
Once I saw it, once I saw what had happened, compassion washed over me. In that instant, anger let go. In the letting go, I saw my part in the whole debacle. I claimed ownership of my end, I was not helpless nor was I blameless. My judgment of her started the whole thing, she knew it and she felt it and I resisted her every step of the way.
Whatever she was supposed to pay me was the price I paid for this awareness. My most salient memory now is the feeling of compassion I had for her and the relief it gave me. Mindfulness and meditation helped me to see it and see myself.
That lesson was worth every penny!

Me: Did anyone practice not lying last week?
5th grader: I did.
Me: What happened?
Her: I am not allowed to play ball in the house but I was playing with my ball in my mother’s bedroom. I kicked the ball and it knocked her T.V. off the dresser.
Me: Did it break?
Her: Yeh, it got a crack in it.
Me: Then what happened?
Her: I really wanted to blame it on my little brother. I didn’t though. My mom came in and asked me what happened. I told her I was playing ball in the house and I knocked it off the dresser.
Me: What did she say? Was she angry?
Her: She was a little but she said, “Thank you for telling me the truth.”
Me: And you didn’t get in trouble?
Her: No.
Me: How do you feel about yourself?
Her: Really good.
Integrity needn’t even be taught, a little meditation and mindfulness is all that is needed to bring out what is natural within us, the wisdom inherent in all of us.
